| Thallus spreading, to 7 cm wide. Lobes plane to somewhat concave, sublinear, overlapping or not, to 5 cm long, (3–) 5 (–15) mm wide, irregularly branched; margins undulate, occasionally deflexed at apices, mostly entire, sometimes irregularly incised or scalloped; phyllidia rare. Upper surface olive-brown to reddish brown when dry, dull, smooth to longitudinally wrinkled or bullate; tomentum thin, sparse, generally confined to apices, less commonly spreading over the entire surface, the central parts ±glabrous. Lower surface whitish to pale buff or, occasionally, tan. Veins raised, 0.3–0.8 mm wide, pale tan to brown, anastomosing, finely covered in flat or slightly raised tomentum; interstices large, polygonal to irregularly elongate, occasionally ±fibrous, pale buff to tan. Rhizines simple to fasciculate, pale tan to brown, becoming very thick and ropey, to 15 mm long. Apothecia saddle-shaped or slightly convex and ±oval, 1.5–3.0 (–5.0) mm wide; disc raised, dull dark brown. Ascospores elongate-fusiform, 5–7-septate, often slightly thickened at one end, 40–50 ×
2.5–5.0 µm, hyaline. Pycnidia not seen.. CHEMISTRY: No substances detected by TLC. |

| Known with certainty only from the N.T., N.S.W. and Tas.; reports from W.A., S.A. and the A.C.T. (McCarthy, 2008) could not be confirmed. Grows on soil in heath, among other Peltigera species and liverworts on leaf litter, on rotting wood in rainforest and on dolerite in montane shrubbery; at altitudes of 400–1040 m. Also in Taiwan and New Zealand, but its global distribution is uncertain (Vitikainen, 2004). | ||
